There are a few wonders in the world that go beyond your wildest imagination. They weren’t only unthinkable but also wasn’t deemed to be practically possible, But Dubai proved otherwise. One such rare wonder of the world is the Dubai Mall Aquarium known as the Dubai Aquarium.
The Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo is a public aquarium located at the base of the Burj Khalifa, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The Aquarium is one of three installations from Merlin Entertainments in Dubai. The other two are Legoland and Madame Tussauds Wax Museum .
Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo was designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects , which took inspiration from Islamic architecture, specifically rib vaulting seen in mosques and madrassas. It cost over AED1 billion (US$272 million) to build.
The aquarium is the world’s largest when it was inaugurated in February 2013. It contains 33,000 marine animals of over 800 species, including over 400 sharks and rays representing some 75 species in 30 displays. The Dubai Aquarium is 450 meters long and contains 6 million US gallons (22,700 m3) of marine and fresh water, which is filtered in a closed loop system to avoid releasing chemicals back into the ocean. The aquarium includes a tunnel that takes visitors through the aquarium with sharks swimming above, below and around them
Visitors are able to stand underneath the main walkway through the centre of this tank
and watch as sharks glide gracefully overhead. Other exhibits include an exhibit containing 12 sand tiger sharks – one of
the largest displays of sand tiger sharks in the world.
The aquarium is home to a captive colony of Australian lungfish , one of only four in the world. The Aquarium also includes a stingray touch-pool where visitors can have an interactive experience with some of Dubai’s marine life. It also houses piranha, terrapins, skates and electric eels .
Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo has 5 zones: Marine Life, Discovery Atoll, Shark Lagoon, River Rock and Deserts zone.
